Following an upsetting start to the season, the Orangeville A's have made one of their biggest signings of the year, welcoming point guard DaQuan Brooks. The 5'10" (1.78 m) floor general has proven himself in the NBL Canada, with the Moncton Miracles last season.
Since relocating from Brampton during the offseason, simply nothing has gone right for the Orangeville A's. Their 5–12 record puts them rock-bottom in the league standings, and they are currently on a six-game losing streak (the last four of which have been by double digits). The introduction of Brooks, however, brings a new sense of hope to the organization.
In his days as a Miracle, the point guard appeared on the starting lineup from time to time, playing a total of 27 contests. He averaged 13 points and five assists, but his main selling point was as a shooter. Brooks shot .328 from beyond the arc, hitting over two three-pointers a game.
It has been a rough ride for the A's since relocation. |
Before this season, he went to Moncton for training camp with the same team. After camp, he traveled home but was not able to find a contract with a single team in the league. Brooks has been in Orangeville for the past month, but he could not find a spot on the team until the injury of Brandon Austin, which opened it up. Brooks has been undaunted by the struggles that the A's have seen so far this season.
"I've been in this situation before, and I've continued to stay positive and work my butt off every day, being ready for the moment. So I'm ready," he told NBLCNET.
Brooks hopes to transition into a leader, and he believes that Orangeville is the place that it will happen. Despite everything, he still has faith in this club.
"I think I can have a big impact as far as leadership on the court, and in the locker room—an explosive player, an experienced player and a high energy guy," he said. "The team has all the right pieces...we just have to come together as one, and I'm hoping I can help bring us together."
It is unknown when Brooks will make his debut with his new team, but keep an eye out for him in the next couple of days.
