The Week That Was - Feb. 1

Atlantic Meets Central - by Chris Croucher

For the first time this season, Atlantic Conference teams made their way to Ontario to take on Central Division squads, as the Island Storm and Moncton Miracles played twice this weekend, with some mixed results.

Things started off strongly on Friday night, with Moncton taking on Orangeville, and the Storm taking on Windsor. Moncton gave the A's all they could handle, with the game tied at 110 in the dying seconds. Unfortunately for the Miracles, Rick Bodiford made a free throw to give the A's a narrow 111-110 victory. The Island Storm fared better, beating the Windsor Express 100-94, while still trying to figure out how to use all their new pieces.

Things weren't quite as rosy when they made their way to London to take on a hot Lightning team. Moncton made a lot of noise by putting a scare into the Bolts, scoring 130 points. The Lightning, with the league's best defence, hadn't allowed more than 115 points all season. The Miracles lack of defence was again their undoing, as they lost the shoot-out 135-130. The Storm, perhaps tired from playing the Express, didn't fare nearly as well, losing 114-105 in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated.


The weekend's games bring the season series to 4-4 in games between the two conferences, meaning that while the eastern teams struggled this weekend, both conferences are equally capable of pulling out a win. In fact, the biggest factor may be home court, as the host teams have won six times, compared to only two wins for the visitors.

The two conferences will clash again on Wednesday, with the Saint John Mill Rats visiting the Niagara River Lions.
